Leo Steinbrecher, 92, was chosen this year for the honor of firing the starter pistol. A long-time fisherman and volunteer at the park, Leo was given trout tag No. 1. He'll turn 93 on March 5. He and his son, Mike, came prepared to fish today, a sport Leo's wife Marilyn taught him. "I hadn't ever done it before," Leo says of that day long ago. "I was a golfer."

Oak Grove resident Larry Brown, in the cowboy hat, says he is proud to have passed his love of Roaring River on to his children and grandchildren, including Jackson, 12, Jacob, 33, and Jameson, 6. Larry proposed to his wife, Mary, at Roaring River. "There's just something special about this River," he says.

Emily Seib and Tom Sims, photography students at Pittsburg State University, are among a group of six that instructor Mike Gullet brought to Roaring River this morning to capture images of opening day. Gullet, himself a professional photographer, has been bringing a group for 13 years and says he finds the event a wonderful way for his students to apply what they've learned in the classroom.

Brighton fisherman Jim Bethurem checks in with Don Bowen, who has been manning the opening day weigh-in station for years. Bethurem, 57, is at the top of the leaderboard with a 4.36 pound trout he caught using a wooly worm and spinner. "This is the best fishing we've averaged out with in years," he says of the stringers he and his sons, Joshua, 30, and Jacob, 25, filled. Next up for the Bethurems: A big breakfast. Come to think of it, I'm getting hungry, too.... Time to head to the lodge for eggs and bacon.

Whew! What a whirlwind of a morning! This has been the most enjoyable opening day of trout season I've ever covered at Roaring River. Partly because of the mild weather, partly because I'm more prepared, and partly because we have technology now that makes my job of capturing the sights and sounds along the riverbank so much more efficient. My day always begins the night before, when I arrive at Roaring River Resort just up the hill from the park. I have to make reservations a year in advance — rooms are hard to find in these parts on Feb. 28. I always look forward to seeing their signs welcoming anglers:
Arriving the night before allows me to visit the park store and check on tag sales, interview a few folks about their reason for doing what many readers refer to as "nutty," and take a walk along the river to capture some photos of the "before." What I noticed last night were two bald eagles and a new sidewalk from the parking lot to one of the wheelchair access spots — a nice addition to the park.Opening Day begins at 5 a.m., when I turn off the alarm and shimmy into the warmest outdoor gear I own: Filson wool socks, several shirt layers, ski jacket and pants, a neck gaiter, stocking cap and gloves. Confession: I leave my PJs on underneath. After grabbing a thermos of hot tea and a granola bar or banana, I like to roll out by no later than 5:30 a.m. The starter pistol is fired at 6:30 a.m. promptly, and I like to get situated well before that. The first year I came here as a reporter and not an angler, I had a flip phone that rarely got a signal along the riverbanks. I had a laptop Mac I'd keep in the car, but relied on my notepad and pen to jot down names, ages, and stories of folks who turned out for the event. I didn't know to bring a gel ink pen, and my pen often froze it was so cold. Every 30 minutes or so, Globe photographer T. Rob Brown and I would jump in the car, which was parked among hundreds of other cars, and navigate our way out of the lot and up to the Emory Melton Conference Center at the top of the hill. We'd plug in the laptop, download some photos from the camera — which seemed to take forever — and I'd cross my fingers that the wi-fi signal (which was sketchy then) would allow us to connect so that we could add to our blog. These days, it's much easier. I still carry my notepad, but now rather than running back and forth to the lodge with a laptop, Globe digital content editor Alexandra Nicolas sets up a liveblog that pulls in all my social media posts from Twitter and Instagram, as well as everyone else's posts that mention #openingday and #roaringriver. To supplement, and to write entries like this, I use a smartphone app called Scribblelive. It allows me to attach photos, video and written content. I can sit on a bench riverside and feed the blog instantly. The event attracts media from near and far, so I see peers from the Kansas City Star, newspapers from Monett, Cassville and other surrounding towns, and radio and TV stations from Springfield. I also see some of the same anglers that have been coming here for Opening Day for years. The event means big business for the area and the state. When I stopped in the lodge for the traditional breakfast buffet, General Manager David Waugh told me that trout season means employment for 50 people on his payroll, from March 1 through Oct. 31. He anticipated feeding at least 300 hungry anglers today. Now, with noon approaching, I'm done with my interviews and am ready to peel off the outside layers — the ski pants and coat, the neck gaiter. Next, I'll sit down at the lodge with my laptop to write my story for tomorrow's Joplin Globe. My husband, a died-in-the-wool trout fisherman, has been my right-hand man this morning but now is headed to the riverbank himself to try to fill a stringer before we head home. -
How cool is it that Cassville's new newspaper editor, who covers Roaring River, has the last name Troutman?!#MeantToBeby Andra Stefanoni via twitter 3/1/2014 5:57:50 PM
